Sam Smith and Kim Petras are the first non-binary and transgender performers in the history of the Grammy Awards to win the gold medal in the category of Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. Smith and Petras are both singers and composers.
Petras, who was 30 years old and dressed in red, expressed her elation by stating, “I’m the first transsexual woman to receive this award.” I would want to express my gratitude to all of the wonderful transgender icons that came before me and opened up these doors.
She then went on to thank her mother, her late friend Sophie, Madonna, 64, a champion for LGBTQ+ rights, and the icon of pop music.
At the awards presentation on Sunday, the trendily hot duo caused mouths to water by wearing scorching red ensembles while receiving the prize for their chart-topping duet “Unholy.”

Smith, who was 30 years old at the time, came out as non-binary in 2019, and in September of that year, they altered their pronouns to they/them.
Petras is a transgender singer-songwriter who hails from the state of Westphalia in Germany. She recently disclosed that her cheeky use of religious themes in song is a technique of recovering from pain caused by devout critics. This revelation came when she was performing at a festival.
“Ever since I was a small child, I just had to be like, ‘I’m going to hell.’ Petras revealed this information to the Associated Press and said, “That was my formative experience.” “Had I been given the opportunity to practice a religion, I probably would have done so. And maybe I would have lived my life more in accordance with how the individuals who demonstrate against my performances want me to live.
