The best new artist award went to jazz singer Samara Joy. She beat out acts like Wet Led, Anitta, and Maneskin. Thank you.” She has put out two albums as a solo artist, and earlier in the night she won the Grammy for best jazz vocal album.
Bonnie Raitt beat out big-name competitors like Adele, Taylor Swift, and Beyoncé to win the song of the year award. “I’m so astonished. “I don’t know what to say,” said a visibly shocked Raitt, adding that the song “Just Like That” is about organ donation. Raitt also won two other Grammys that night, for best Americana performance and best American roots song.
The biggest names in hip-hop took the stage for a 15-minute tribute to the 50th anniversary of the genre. Grandmaster Flash did part of his classic song “The Message,” and Run DMC, Chuck D, Flavor Flav, Ice-T, Queen Latifah, Busta Rhymes, and Nelly were also on stage.
At the end, everyone on stage yelled “multi-generational!” and LL Cool J joined in. “Fiftieth!”
The performance was a crowd-pleaser at an event that hasn’t always been good about recognizing rap.
